Out with the broken hood vent

The hood vent we bought for the kitchen rehab ten years ago has gone through many repairs, including the use of epoxy and legos to hold the switch plate in place.  Clever fix from handyman husband Brett.

What I thought was going to be a simple afternoon project turned out to be a weekend-long saga! I ordered a more powerful vent on Amazon to replace our first vent hood from IKEA that we purchased 10 years ago.  I'm an avid cook and the kitchen vent hood is used at least twice a day for breakfast and dinner meal prep.  The old hood was not powerful enough to exhaust the smoke from wok cooking so I was glad to get a more powerful one.  I also wanted a vent with baffles for easier cleaning.

We started to take off the old hood and that was more a two-hour job!  The hood was secured so well on the wall it took a lot of unscrewing, wedging out and disconnecting the electrical wire.  It was hard-wired into the wall.  Brett had to cut into the soffit vent to get it all out.  This created a large hole that we had to cover.  We used old ship-lap boards left over from our attic renovation and trimmed out the new hood.  I think he did a great job hiding the damage!
